Drawing Techniques

Mechanical drafting is a field within the worldwide. In these terms, it is used to consider the methods for drawing and design machines. It doesn’t include buildings and structures (Architectural & Structural drawing) or landscapes and roads (Civil drafting and engineering).

LINE TYPE

When you first start CAD, the default template has only one line type is available. This is the continuous line type. CAD has many more available, but only loads in one to start with in order to keep the drawing file size same. If you need to other line type, you load it into your desire drawing. As is usually the case in CAD, there are many ways to do this.

line load

LINE TYPE command brings up the Line type Manager dialog box or By layer line type control from properties . Pick Other then Click LOAD creating a new line type into your drawing. CAD has more d line type that you can loaded.

Notice that CAD is giving you a choice of different line types in the acad.lin file. Scroll up and down the list to see what types of line you have available. Which one you choose is up to you. When doesn’t display you line you have to go properties and change line type scale.

LINE TYPE SCALE

Your line type scale determines what type of lines are displayed and plotted. Depending on your line type or actual area you set up, you may have to change it. This is one more reason, why you should set up your drawing properly from the Starting. If you change your line type scale, because default area setting of Auto CAD are 12 meter X 9 meter.

Hide lines

Here is a single line type (hidden) with 3 different line type scales . Notice that the line with a LTS of .5 has lines and dashes that are 1/2 the size of line above it. The line with a LTS of 10 has lines and dashes that are 10 times bigger.

Line types can also be controlled by putting them all one layer and using the By Layer option of properties toolbar. You could have all of your hidden lines on one layer so you can turn them off all at once or give them a light line weight.

Another property of lines is line weight. When you printed your drawing then how wide they display on the screen. For example of a heavier line weight would be a border around a title. Sometimes, you may use a lighter line weight for Center line or Section line. But whatever you use them for; they are display options of LWT form task bar.

Here are the range of line weights available (There are more options in between):
